Topic: The Official One and Only Star Citizen Thread: Crusader 3.1

squeegee started this discussion 2 weeks ago #73,853

Externally hosted image

This thread is made to be a catch-all for all Star Citizen conversation and news.

I'll update this thread when there are new releases or anything related to Star Citizen that might be of interest to people here. If you're thinking of making your own Star Citizen thread, consider posting your thoughts here instead of making a new topic. (part 1 - part 2 - part 3)

The Crusader system now contains fully explorable procedurally generated moons peppered with landing locations, crash sites, hidden bases and other points of interest. with these locations come new gameplay opportunities in the form of missions to visit these locations for a variety of reasons. they're starting to flesh out roles like scavenger/salvager and police/private investigator among others. there is also a super basic economy which allows for trading between stations and outposts, and a lot of missions available to transport cargo for employers.

and there's options for space suits and related items. there are several undersuits with a variety of costs and benefits, and there are also armor options for torso, head, legs and arms.

so between suit options, armor, weapons, and clothing flair items there is some fun to be had upgrading equipment.

decided to visit the bazaar at Levski, there's no good missions up atm. unfortunately the margins on trading are super low and aren't worth the risk losing everything to a disconnect. i don't recommend sinking much into trading until they fix the disconnect issue, or at least let us log back into our ship. right now if you DC in flight you wake up at a station and your ship is gone. not worth losing everything for like a 10% margin.

traded an m50 in for a Cutlass, even steven. the m50 is a pretty great looking little ship, but it has zero versatility. it's nothing more than a racer, and has very limited use in combat. it can't really go head to head with much since it has a pretty light loadout. it can't carry cargo either, about the only thing it has is acceleration. the Cutlass isn't nearly as quick or nimble, but it has way more utility right now than most ships. any ship with an internal volume you can walk around in is a great money maker, smaller ships with storage aren't as good, because most of the cargo crates can't be placed inside the internal cargo holds of smaller ships. since the cutlass is a small/medium transport it has a large walkable interior but it's not the size of a caterpillar and costs less to refuel and run around.

and i think the missions are getting better, i've come across a couple that paid double the usual rate for transporting cargo. i'm not sure if that's random, or if better missions become available once you build some reputation. it's still not super easy to make money, but it's feeling better. still though, struggling to afford a full set of new clothes is probably a bit on the slow side.

i haven't tried the game in vr, but some people have gotten it to work with 3rd party programs and stuff. there's not full vr support, but they do plan on vr support eventually. it's not being designed necessarily as a vr game, and a lot of decisions aren't being made with anything but a nod to vr. i'm afraid the way they take control of your body to do animations like picking up crates or climbing into ships will just make people sick. but, from what i've heard flying around in vr is pretty bad ass. a lot like elite dangerous in vr.

i've used an oculus rift and viewed some of the ships in a vr room and you could kinda walk around them and get in the seats to see how it looks. the scale of some of the ships is really impressive in vr.

@877,570 (E)
the facetracking thing is optional and isn't a critical feature for gameplay purposes. it's also a 3rd party software vendor developing a game integration that partnered with CIG to develop this feature in exchange for exposure along side star citizen, it's not costing cig any time or money, and is just a neat little thing that'll be in game eventually.

they actually have people on staff who are working on the VR side of star citizen. it's not a huge focus, and so it's not getting development time right now, but it's been a pet project for several years now and i don't think is taking a backseat to facetracking.

not to mention that the face tracking could just be used to track mouth motions without tracking eyes, so goggles would just block half of that features utility, rather than facetracking rendering VR moot.

the real problem with VR is that the technology isn't widely adopted, otherwise they would be designing the game with vr in mind and would make more decisions that would facilitate comfortable VR gameplay.

have you downloaded the latest patch? the newest one went live a few hours ago and so far it's been great.

you also need to turn off windows Game Bar. right click Start, go to settings, find Gaming, find the toggle for Gamebar near the top and turn it off. it doesn't play well with Lumberyard.

you can also get a significant performance improvement by turning off any other game overlays (like shadowplay tools)

but it depends which patch you had that problem and if it was in the rolled back 3.1.1 build which was absolute shit.

Externally hosted imagePatch 3.1.1

this is a great patch, i stayed logged on for almost 3 hours before the server tanked. FPS is considerably improved as well, running 40+ most of the time, and the rest of the time was 60+. there are still the occasional hitches, but it's much more stable. the patch notes mention fixing memory leaks in the server.

whatever they did, it's great, i was able to do several missions and land on all 3 moons and visit a lot of points of interest. I also did a little trading and made a fair amount of cash. I'm already filling the entire cutlass' cargo hold, pretty soon i'll need to start flying the Caterpillar or switch commodities.

Externally hosted imagemade a bunch of money on hacker missions to turn off com-arrays. you get paid 540 credits each, which is a very substantial payment. the downside is it maxes out your wanted level. but if you can do 2 or 3 in a row then you can make a bunch of quick cash being sneaky.

when you jump to the com arrays with wanted levels you'll get chased away by security, unless they can't find you. so if you switch on stealth mode (reduced IR and EM signatures) then you can put yourself on an approach path to the communications array, and then switch off your power once you're on your way. it takes a couple of minutes to coast over there, and sometimes security will spot you, but they'll always catch on once you switch power back on to stop your ship. park it as close to the array as you can get, and then before you get destroyed launch chaff (drops all radar signatures) and then power down everything and exit the ship.

if you're fast and lucky, they'll lose you and never pick your ship back up until after you hack the array and are escaping with your ship. at that point stealth stops mattering, so full power to everything and get to quantum speeds as quickly as possible.

rinse repeat.

so far except for being attacked when the UEE Advocacy are around there's not much downside to being a wanted criminal.

squeegee (OP) quadruple-posted this 1 week ago, 13 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^] [v] #879,748

you can finally see where they're going with the persistent universe and how missions and story will work. this system, Stanton, is plagued with pirates feeding on the commerce generated by the local mega-corporations. the Gas Giant planet Crusader especially, because the EM radiation bathing the moons make for very discrete hiding places. Crusader Security is in the middle of expanding a network of satellites to help boost detection of illicit activity, and they are building a new security station to house a much expanded security force. but, due to the sabotaging of the Covalex shipping hub almost all work has stalled on Kareah Security Station until the pirate threat is under control.

Privateers are being hired to maintain the flow of goods throughout the sector, and likewise smugglers are in high demand to transport stolen goods and drugs.

you can build rep with 2 alignments right now, there are plenty of legal jobs that don't require breaking any laws and hunting pirates is a good way to build "good guy rep." you can also just trade cargo and as long as it's not contraband then you gain positive rep.

but there are also missions to smuggle goods and interfere with security in the sector. they are great paying jobs. normal jobs get normal pay, but risky jobs have a higher reward. hacking and overloading com arrays pays well and gains you lots of "bad guy rep," but it also gets security on your ass.

squeegee (OP) quintuple-posted this 1 week ago, 10 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^] [v] #879,757

Externally hosted imageyou can always go to the unfinished Security Station, which is normally abandoned, and hack away your criminal rating. but that takes a lot of time, and there are ways to use stealth and creative piloting to avoid security when turning off com arrays.

unfortunately there doesn't appear to be a way to build rep directly with any of the pirate factions, even though they maybe have been paying you to smuggle drugs and stock hidden stashes for them, the best they'll do is sometimes ignore you. it's easy enough to run from them, for now, but i don't think they are using EMPs to disable ships at the moment. i've been able to mostly just outrun them.

i'm not sure where the story goes with Eckhart and Ruto, or if there will be more added when 3.2 drops, but it seems like there's a conflict that'll end up getting resolved in some manner.

if this is the kind of thing they have planned to add story to the PU, then i'm on board. it actually reminds me a lot of privateer and how that game worked. i didn't even know that game had a story until i discovered it while playing around trading and fighting pirates.

are you standing near the door, holding F to bring up the interact icon and mousing over the locking mechanism until the icon becomes a circle and then left clicking to unlock and open the door when the option to OPEN becomes highlighted?

the whole holding F to interact with things is how you do everything now.

@879,813 (Fake anon !ZkUt8arUCU)
it's approaching that, yes. once they get 3.x up to snuff it's actually going to be a pretty good experience.
at least now there's missions to do and reasons to do them, and you can do a limited amount of trading.

piracy is a thing too, but it's not the easiest thing to pull off. so there's some sandboxing you can do with piracy and trading.

the biggest drawback right now is the frequency of wipes. they wipe everything with each patch, so, you can't really work towards anything too ambitious. but there's weeks/months between wipes so it's not too bad. it doesn't really matter anyway because at the moment you can't spend but about 15k before there's nothing left to buy. but it'll take some time to get to that point.

it's very, very close to offering the nuts-and-bolts of Elite:Dangerous, but pretty far from the same scope. 3.x is all about adding the profession mechanics, cargo, salvage, bounty hunting, etc. and adding combat NPC's to ground bases and stuff like that. should be a very productive few months ahead as far as fleshing out activities.

tl;dr yep, and it's starting to get fun

that's one i haven't seen, but it's on the issue council as having not been resolved. it's not getting a lot of attention from testers so it may be something kinda rare.

you need to make sure Windows Game Bar is disabled, as that will cause a bunch of problems (mostly related to performance) but some stuff like interaction might be bugged with it.
after that you can delete the User folder in the roberts space industries/starcitizen/live directory to reset your client and then verify files in the launcher.
if that doesn't work, then when you're logged in and standing in the spawn room, hit f12 to open up the chat window and use an emote, like /dance or /salute or something. that can unbug your avatar if it gets stuck or can't perform an interaction with boxes. might work on doors too.

i'll ask around and see if anyone else has that problem and how they get around it. i'm reading that it goes away when you log out and back in.

Patch 3.1.2-LIVE.744137

New PTU build published to live servers. many crash fixes, and a new crash handler adds a kind of "save state" that helps to prevent crashes from resetting your character. Now when you have a client crash if you log back in within ten minutes you'll log back into your ship and it'll load into the universe wherever you were when your client logs out. if you wait too long it'll go ahead and "kill" you and mark your ship as lost and you'll have to file an insurance claim to get it back and you'll have lost all your cargo, but that's what used to happen every time the client crashed. now we at least have a chance to log back in and save everything.

we can also evidently log out using ship beds, and when we log back in we'll spawn in the ship and the ship will spawn wherever you were when you logged out. that means ships can actually act as bases/homes now. we can leave port olisar and never have to return, which is pretty cool.

there are still a lot of things that i don't know about though, like what happens when you log out using someone else's ship's bed. not sure if you'll log back into their ship as long as they don't leave the game, or if you'll spawn their ship and have any control over it if you log in and they are logged out. not sure what happens if i log out using a ship bed while the ship has passengers, does it disappear when i log out or does it stay in game as long as people are on board. i know right now ships are supposed to log out after 10 minutes of inactivity or something like that, but i'm not sure if that means walking around inside it or if you have to be piloting it.

anyway, about to check it out and see how performance and stability are in this patch. 3.1 has actually been pretty damn good.

every ship is available to test out, just follow the link and use the promo code on your RSI account.

3.1.2 is better than 3.1, especially performance. getting 40-50fps consistently, but there is still an irregular stutter that happens periodically that has to do with server side issues. there are still 3 major systems that aren't in place, Network Bind Culling, Object Container Streaming, and Network Entity Streaming. these are in work right now and are on the roadmap for the next few major patches. they'll bring big reductions in the amount of memory used and the load on the CPU, so performance should improve even further later in the year. each patch is also getting an optimization pass to improve things as much as possible.

it's in a pretty decent place right now, but there are still infrequent crashes (both of the client and server variety.) using beds to log out/in works, but logging out on someone else's ship doesn't. you wake up at port olisar. the crash handler isn't 100%, i've heard people say it fails as often as it works, so if you crash out of the game you're not guaranteed to log back in to your ship.

and everyone and their mother is selling drugs now, it's the only way to quickly make money. which means that the drug lab is either constantly out of stock, or none of the ports will have any demand. so either gangs need to start defending the drug lab and allowing only their ships through or there's no money in Widow anymore.

Externally hosted imagethe verse is a dangerous place. especially if you have poor execution. i was at the site of a crashed freelancer looking to identify the bodies of the dead for an insurance contract when gunfire broke out. it was pitch black at night and there were at least a couple of other people there collecting cargo and searching for the black box. i was on the other side of the wreck and was able to take cover behind some rocks and had, like, the perfect shot at the guy when he came around the hull and ran in front of me, like, 20 yards away right by some fire. couldn't have had a cleaner shot. i had to reload and he ran around the other side of the crushed hull and i lost him.

i fucked around trying to work my way around the perimeter of things in the dark and dude flanked me and brained me right when i started to wonder if he was somewhere right behind me.

performance is up, crashes are down and servers are packed.

lol I made it out of my have door finally with this patch! But then I crashed changing my settings before I left olisar so I played arena commander which also worked for the first time since 3.0. was fun. they changed the load out in the 325a to add a panther repeater so I put on my Badgers and just went around repeating
it's kinda menacing

i've noticed server performance is all over the place, some servers are running great and others are a slide show. it seems like as performance degrades the likelihood of a client or server crash happening soon is high. if you crash just join the PU again, there's a chance you'll respawn where you left off and if not then you'll probably log into a newer, fresher server and get better performance/longer playtime before a random crash.

i haven't fucked with custom loadouts or much with the fighters. the civilian hornet is weak as fuck with the default loadout, i can tell you that. really needs the ball turret, 2 more guns, and an upgraded powerplant. basically it needs to be the military variant. lol.

the most popular ships in this patch are ships like the Avenger, Reliant and the Cutlass that have both ramps and internal cargo holds. you can do every "hand-carry" cargo mission there is because you can carry a box into the ship and place it on the floor. ships with ladders make you drop cargo boxes and ships with external "container" storage, like the Aurora, can't apparently be loaded with cargo boxes yet.

use the free-fly promo code and you can try out all the small cargo ships.

I only didn't like the paint job on mine but they fixed it. the stairs killed me when they opened in the 3.0 patch though lol. the new 100i looks kinda neat if you haven't seen it. consider this though, if you're a 325a owner, the whole 300 series is getting a redesign and will likely gain a size like the new avenger, which is pretty sweet looking by the way, and might end up being a really versatile ship. the 600 series are really, really fucking cool if you haven't seen those, they're just out of concept and the interiors are huge. the 300 will probably fall between those two somewhere and i'm 100% sure they'll end up with a large luxurious interior space.

and yeah, just use the code and it unlocks all the ships if you want to try them out.

yeah, it's a neat looking little boat. the AIR refining system thing seems pretty nice too, it'll probably end up being a lot of people's personal transport since it'll have very low operating costs. you can carry at least one seated passenger so it will probably end up getting used a lot as a taxi, especially for trips within a system. as of right now i think every ship regenerates fuel, but that's just a placeholder until refueling mechanics are in game. after that ships like the 100i, the freelancer DUR, and the Starfarer will all have fuel scooping systems. i'm betting the 100i also sacrifices some performance to carry the fuel intake. probably it'll perform more like an aurora than the 300 series. we'll see.

i hate to admit it, but the cutlass is now my favorite ship. the old cutlass was ugly and terrible in every way imaginable. but the new cutlass is excellent. it's much better looking, and it's extremely functional. it carries a lot more than the avengers too. pretty heavily armed too, and very tanky. nice top speed and lots of low end acceleration with drop off towards the upper end. you won't outrun everything, but most things that would want to fuck with you. i can see the cutlass as being a lot of people's choice for an upgrade path in the PU. especially for smugglers. the more dedicated cargo ships in that class (hull series especially) don't seem to be as versatile on the combat side of things.

old vs new. and the rear engines are now fixed and don't rotate so it doesn't fly all retarded anymore. it's a bit burdensome compared to the smaller ships, but it's not nearly as lumbering as the caterpillar or even constellation sized ships. the view is kinda fucked up, like you're too low in the seat so the controls take up too much of the screen but once you get used to it it's not as bad as some others.

edit: the 300 series will likely get the same kind of overhaul and end up a bit bigger

(Edited 2 minutes later.)

squeegee (OP) double-posted this 1 week ago, 8 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^] [v] #881,311

Externally hosted imageold avenger vs new avenger. the increase in size gives them a lot more room inside to make it more functional. the new avenger has a small quarters behind the cockpit between the cargo hold that's much bigger than the old crawlspace with a bed/hallway to the cargo hold thing it was before. i'm betting the 300 series gets a cabin similar to the 100 series, but with a cargo compartment that's ramp accessible.
