Topic: How come Mojang / Microsoft rarely do any big updates anymore?

Catherine !TGirlYJKXM started this discussion 6 days ago #70,596

We have one that would most likely end up somewhat disappointing, but the tridents look fun. It seems like every update there is less and less. 1.13 did add in awesome custom crafting recipes that don't require any mods. 1.14 looks fun. But what about the future? Would we be back to the same old lesser updates? Microsoft wants this to be a century game so certainly they could spurge a bit more and add more to the updates.

What does that even mean?

They don't update it much anymore because they don't need to. The popularity of Minecraft originated on YouTube, where most of the content was letsplay material. Eventually the common video form became mod reviews, and now everything is just map playthroughs, some of which are modded. There are pretty much no more popular vanilla playthroughs (for example, Antvenom, who has 2.5 mil subs, almost entirely makes vanilla videos, which typically get under 100k views). If you look up Minecraft on YouTube, it's all just maps, which are entirely user-made. Even if Mojang did some major updates, it wouldn't actually get much traction, which is why the updates are getting less frequent (and pretty much only add superficial content, giving mapmakers more stuff to do).

Spurge: a herbaceous plant or shrub with milky latex and very small typically greenish flowers. Many kinds are cultivated as ornamentals and some are of commercial importance.

Because they already milked everyone who could possibly play this game. Time to abandon it and make Minecraft 2. It will be 2d and everything will be triangles.

That's just what they said. Everyone just assumed it meant that they wanted to keep Minecraft new and interesting for 100 years. The actual wording they used was "100 year game".

They honestly don't need to make Minecraft 2. They could just continue to profit off of the Minecraft marketplace.
