Topic: Minichan I'm doing the ol "tell your boss you want to quit" gamble and it might be working

Anonymous A started this discussion 2 months ago #65,933

Dear Minidiary,

My department director is a business bro and his right hand man is one of the biggest assholes I have had to work under. I've been at this company for just over a year. Two weeks ago I told the department director I'm tired of the bullshit and need to see change or I'm headed out. This is a risky gamble.

I may have also mentioned I have little confidence that he'll actually make a positive change.

I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't have comfortable savings and extremely marketable skills. There's effectively negative unemployment in my field and I have a great resume and flawless background.

I'm somewhat waiting for the shoe to drop and to get a termination letter. If I stick around through the end of the year I'm likely to get a $6,000 bonus. If I stay through July 2018 I'm guaranteed a $20,000 bonus. The money is fairly motivating.

I'm slowly trending toward doing just enough work to stick around and to avoid the attention of these assholes. Wish me luck, Miniforum.

Oh. Important detail: I've since been told multiple times by the director and my manager that I'm really needed and they want to keep me on the team. It's nice to feel I have the upper hand in this negotiation.

A business bro? That sounds pretty rad, man!

I bet his stories are cool.

Just be alpha. When you go in lean back and put your feet on his desk and blow vape smoke in his face 😎

Nah.

You seem to misunderstand the use of my vaporizer. It's a wall-plug, medical device and not the vapelord stuff where you blow fat clouds and buy juice at some shitty strip mall.

Goddamn this is the worst insult I have ever received.

Sir, if I were svet then this thread would have four obvious typos, list money in £, and blame immigrants.

You take that back RIGHT NOW

Is "bro" supposed to be a bad thing because business bro sounds really cool actually.

Meta double-posted this 2 months ago, 43 seconds later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #812,978

I'm reclaiming bro. It'll be the new N-word. Only cool white guys with popped collars can say it.

He drives a fancy car, wears nice sunglasses, and wears the preppy clothing synonymous with popped collars. It's a cheap stereotype and fun when useful.

Go freelancing dumbass

Anonymous A (OP) replied with this 1 month ago, 6 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^] [v] #817,020

@previous (D)
no freelancing requires communicating with clients, sending invoices, and following up for bullshit when they fail to pay

I'm enjoying showing up and receiving a direct bank transfer. Thanks.

Invoicing one a month for twice as much money is actually worth it. I went from $80k to $150k a year doing less work.
I've done so little and had so many people be so impressed. If you are actually good and there is a shortage get out there dumbass. You can get some wage slave job anytime

Anonymous A (OP) replied with this 1 month ago, 3 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^] [v] #817,026

but I'm already at about $150k and salaried why would I want more overhead and tax complication for the same pay

Anonymous D replied with this 1 month ago, 5 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^] [v] #817,029

@previous (A)
You definitely make more money freelancing, and have more time and freedom to spend it and enjoy life. Stop being scared and lazy and go make it in the big bad world on your own, kid.

I work about 32 hours a week and get full pay with health insurance and restricted stock

I'm still not seeing how more complicated taxes, more risk, more communication complexity, and regularly having to find more work would be of any gain

If you were a real man then you would definitely leave your incredibly comfortable compensation to gamble on slightly more money!!!11

Oh one of the job applications I have submitted is going pretty well. I’ve spoken with HR and the department director. I might soon be meeting the team.

If this potential job has more than a $10k loss in pay then I don’t think I’ll take it.
