Worlds Adrift is now available on steam in closed beta. it's an mmo, involves crafting, survival, PvP and resource gathering as core mechanics. what makes it unique is that it heavily relies on the use of multiplayer, player design and built "airships" that you use to travel around a shattered world of floating islands.

i've been watching some streams and it looks pretty fun. a group of 5 or so were sailing around with a bunch of cannons on their ship and attacking everyone pirate style. chasing them down, disabling their ship, boarding, looting, killing, it was pretty cool.

you start out with basic junk and build a ship and start exploring and gathering resources for a better ship and weapons and whatnot. there's also a story kinda hidden in the lore of the world. idk how deep that's planned to go, but the PvP looked fun, everyone running around the ship firing cannons and using grappling hooks and gliders to get around. i haven't seen much of the exploring of caves and islands or PvE stuff like hunting animals or whatever, but i imagine that's all at least as exciting as resource gathering is in any game.

take a look and if there's enough interest we can start a pirate crew, on the C.S.S.Minichanopolis, the south will fly again!

so my 2 hour return window will pretty much be up before i've accomplished much. i probably should've watched a couple of how-to videos instead of just figuring it out, because there's not a lot of step-by-step instruction. i wasted a whole bunch of time playing with the grappling hook and trying to mine nodes hanging off the side of the island too.

resource collection fucks up any quick start since it's an mmo and mining nodes aren't super plentiful if there's other people around. i've managed to claim a ship-yard and build a small frame for a ship. i'm going to try and put sails on it and the other parts it needs to fly and go to an island somewhere else to farm for resources to make a better ship with armaments and engines.

so it's kind of a slow start like you'd expect from a resource collection/survival type game i guess. and you can lose all your shit easily. and people can kill you. but, you can kill people and steal people's shit easily so there's that.

anyway, if you do get it to try it on steam and maybe return it watch a how-to-build ships video so you don't waste all your time figuring it out.

and if you do get it i'm on the US WEST server by the name squeegee.

lame

so i finally got a simple boat built. took it to another island and found a lot more to farm. i built a bigger better ship that has a hold with some barrels for storage. it's a sailing ship, since i don't have engines researched yet. it's pretty hard to steer because wind direction is apparently a thing, and so you have to tack properly i guess if you want to go upwind. you can get the general area you want to be in, but it'll be hard to park it over a ship yard and dock it. probably it'll get rebuilt once i get engines unlocked. but for now it'll work just fine. unless i get attacked. i don't have cannons yet.

it sure would be helpful if someone else on the crew could put their research points into the weapons tree and focus on unlocking high tier weapons while i'm unlocking engines and stuff. i've already seen some people we could be attacking.

C.S.S. Minichanopolis in dry dock. she turns like a doped up cow, but she's fast. well, fast enough. i guess.

right now i'm cladding the lower half with bronze panels for some reason, and the top decks more wood. weight is a consideration when building, but also protection. the cargo hold, i figure, should probably have the best protection since it's also the "engine room" for the antigravity generator.

squeegee (OP) double-posted this 1 week ago, 3 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #798,918

the grappling hook shit is fun, i gotta say. this is a very physics driven game and it's pretty good. i will say that it takes a bit of practice, it's kinda easy to ragdoll yourself into a wall, tree or hillside. but it's awesome when your grapple wire gets tangled around the mast and you circle closer and closer until you ragdoll against it and die like wily e. coyote. but yeah, it's wonky if you're not patient with it.

most of the lower hull done. wood panels added around to complete the hull and also act as a bit of a railing. the railing actually helps a lot. you can kinda walk up the side of things when you're grappling, so it makes the masts a really nice grapple point to get around

squeegee (OP) quadruple-posted this 1 week ago, 1 minute later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #798,920

the antigravity engine thing. pretty cool i suppose. i left some opening for cannon placement. we're really heavy though, pushing max weight for the antigravity drive. probably need to replace the bronze clad with just wood, or figure out how to carry more weight if that's on option. it says not to use two drives on one ship. so maybe i need engines and like helicopter rotors, i think i saw that on someone's stream.

squeegee (OP) sextuple-posted this 1 week ago, 2 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #798,922

right now all of the ship's momentum comes from the wind. the antigravity drive just lets you hover, to go places you either need sails or engines. sails are cheap, and don't require research. i'm still working on unlocking engines. they are expensive. but i found a cool cave system to explore and that gave me almost 100 knowledge, so i'm more than halfway there.

squeegee (OP) septuple-posted this 1 week ago, 3 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #798,923

the first person view for navigation isn't great when you're trying to dock, but like old sailing ships it helps to be up high and towards the rear of the ship. it would help if the deck could be slanted a bit, but i'm not sure it'll allow that, i may be wrong. the next version i'll try different things, but i'm not going to redesign until i have more stuff unlocked. i might also try off setting the helm so the bow can be easily seen on one side at least.

(Edited 57 seconds later.)

squeegee (OP) octuple-posted this 1 week ago, 11 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #798,925

until i find the recipe for stairs this is how i'm getting between decks. pretty good for picture taking too. there's a lot that i'm unhappy with aesthetically with this build. but i made the hull shape pretty quickly and didn't nit pick it. i'll salvage all of this and rebuild a better version of the hull when i understand more about what makes a good ship in this game.

and it turns out that some of the islands are pretty huge and have a fuck load of resources. i haven't found anything else to do really, other than farm for stuff to build things. i haven't run across anything that would lead to to a narrative i don't think. and i'm not sure what kind of interactions to expect, there's some alien critters and things, but i don't think i've run across anything like a town. i haven't gone very far though. maybe there's a place i can sell my surplus mats and maybe buy rare stuff? idk.

squeegee (OP) nonuple-posted this 1 week ago, 10 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #798,930

as far as performance goes it's kinda all over the place. i don't expect stability in betas, and this one has its fair share of lag issues and brief freezes. it hasn't crashed on me in game yet, but it sometimes gets really hitchy. i'm finding it to be generally playable, with moderately frequent frame rate issues.

but i can really see the potential of this game. it needs to be able to offer more than just resource collection for the sake of ship building, but if they do then it could be fun for other types of players too.

ATTENTION YOU SCURVY DOGS: this will be the last announcement made by me, Capt. Squeegee, all further announcements to the crew will be made by our new Quartermaster, Brie. Congratulations Quartermaster Brie. That also means that all further inquiries about joining this crew shall be directed towards the new Quartermaster. likewise, any and all current crew or incoming NEW crew will be coordinating with the Quartermaster once onboard as a further insulation of the crew for the sake of maintaining a proper chain of command.

for those interested, we have DO have officer positions available at the discretion of the captain. those positions are as follows:

Sailing Master (First officer, second in command during battle) - you'll assist in navigation and sailing of the ship, and act as a spotter for the captain when he's under control. this is similar to a first officer's role, and has 1 vote.

Boatswain - you'll supervise the maintenance of the ship and supplies for the vessel. (not food, that's the quartermaster's role.) you'll be in charge of all deck activities, including working the sails. to that end you'll have the responsibility of mustering the crew to help perform repairs or bring in the sails should that order come down. during battles it'll be your responsibilities to affect repairs to the ship, and coordinate and idle crew to that end. the boatswain also has one vote.

Master Gunner - you'll be responsible for the ship's cannons and ammunition supply. cannons do need to be reloaded, and you'll coordinate with the crew to keep the cannons loaded and firing when ordered to do so. you'll call the shots, and make requests of the Sailing Master to provide for a better shot. Master Gunner also gets one vote.

Quartermaster - FILLED - Crew liason, responsible for food stores and crew comforts. responsible for command of the crew at all times other than battle. the Quartermaster gets 2 votes.

Mates - general crew, responsibilities include loading/firing the cannons at the discretion of the Master Gunner, helping manage sails or affect repairs to the ship when required by the Boatswain, or engage in boarding party activity when ordered by the Quartermaster. this role gets no votes, but is paid equally.

As captain i will retain unlimited authority during battle, but at all other times decisions will be made by voting. the captain gets 2 votes.

From this point forward this thread will be treated as a captains log, all questions need to be directed to the quartermaster who will then brig it to my attention formally. thank you.

I've spotted what appears to be a small island very low and far away near the storm walls. it's it's low enough and isolated enough it looks like it may not get many visitors, most people seem to stick to the very large islands with all the mineral farming nodes.

after being under way from some time the island still appeared distant, but it was too risky to put out the other sails without some form of crew to assist. i would need to come about hard near the storm wall and needed to drop a lot of altitude before approach, and it was necessary to remain on the steering deck

Capt. Squeegee (OP) sextuple-posted this 1 week ago, 14 minutes later, 2 days after the original post[^] [v] #799,119

i brought the ship about and brought her in over the top of the island to scout for a safe spot to bring her down. i found a small spot in the middle of the island right between two spawn towers and near a small grove of trees. after making a clearing i brought her down low and set up a ship dock right beneath to swap put the oak and elm paneling for all light weight cedar. every panel, every deck needs to be swapped out. the Blowhard weights in at 990... units of weight? (i'm not sure if it's meant to be tons or what.) but she's a pig, and it's all the heavy paneling that's doing it. she's a big ship, and it takes a lot of paneling to cover the hull. the bronze paneling of the lower hull each weight 9... i'm just gonna call them tons. but the cedar panels are only 4. they're absolutely not as resilient, but the weight reduction should at least allow for a fuel tank and one engine if not two. hopefully. like i'm going to spend any time doing math.

Capt. Squeegee (OP) septuple-posted this 1 week ago, 7 minutes later, 2 days after the original post[^] [v] #799,120

i decided to go ahead and do some exploring while i was collecting cedar logs. the ship was parked right next to an artifact of Ancient Knowledge which i collected, and there was even a loot box nearby which contained schematics for a wing and a bandit hood that i plan to give as a gift to my Quartermaster for doing such an outstanding job of assembling a competent crew. it is red, like the color of all of the blood that he and his savage crew of cut throats will spill in the skies.

pictured, oh yes, i found a cave. it was neat. spooky.

i collected a lot of logs, like 12 trees worth. math would tell you it was 1200, but fuck math, and fuck organizing stacks, that shit is for nerds. and fuck the june bug looking insects, they're docile, so they say, but i swear to you several of them chased me while i was logging. they didn't "attack" me, but they seemed to be "flying at me." i'm not sure they're responding to me at all, or if their flight pathing just seems aggressive, so i'm avoiding them and treating them as if they can hurt me.

i found another loot box and schematics for engines which is excellent. i also managed to farm quite a few nodes of Iron, which is lighter than the bronze the Blowhard is framed out of. significantly so, actually. i began stripping the paneling and decided to strip it completely down, salvage the hull, and remake the hull out of Iron and Cedar.

Capt. Squeegee (OP) double-posted this 1 week ago, 16 minutes later, 2 days after the original post[^] [v] #799,128

right as the new hull materialized another player spawned on the island in one of the towers. i was leery of him at first, but i showed him that i had my pistol, presumably loaded, and then put it away to show i wasn't aggressive. he didn't pull his weapon, if he even still had it, and then he went about the business of resource collecting. mostly, i believe he was there for the artifact of ancient knowledge right next to my ship dock, but i kept an eye out for him and any ships that might be incoming.

with the weight reductions offered by iron and cedar the Blowhard now carries a fuel tank and two engines and still keeps a majority of the hull paneling and the railings. i did slightly tweak the hull shape and i removed the forcastle section because it made going below deck difficult. it's still not super easy getting out. that'll need some work.

Capt. Squeegee (OP) triple-posted this 1 week ago, 11 minutes later, 2 days after the original post[^] [v] #799,130

right as i was about to get under way for a test flight the treasure chests respawned. i looted them both and found a schematic for stairs, hopefully i can redesign the mid deck to accommodate them and still get good mast placement. but, with all the new accoutrements she's back up to 960 tons or so. with working engines we don't really need 3 sails, one will work if we run out of fuel, but it's very slow going. she's got 2 engines placed, i'd like to keep them both, and also use the sails for extra speed and a stealthy look.

sailing ships are all low tier starter ships, so people are going to ignore those ships in low tier zones. engines can actually be placed inside the hull and still work just fine to propel the ship. a long ship like the blowhard can carry quite a few engines, even internally. with sails as camouflage and no engines showing people might not look too closely at us until we have altitude on them and can barrage them with cannons.

Capt. Squeegee (OP) quadruple-posted this 1 week ago, 18 minutes later, 2 days after the original post[^] [v] #799,139

addendum: i farmed a little fuel before i left, and decided to grab some cedar logs for repairs. i wasn't paying attention when i heard the june bug buzzing nearby. it came out of fucking no where. before i knew what happened i was ragdolling across the island. the fucker rammed right into me. i was tumbling quickly off the side, i tried to get off a grapple, and the impact knocked me out and broke the cable. i helplessly slipped over the side and plummeted to my death.

luckily i had registered with the new ship spawner, so i didn't lose the ship, but i did lose a bunch of random mats.

and Brie's Quartermaster hood.

fucking june bug bitches. i knew those fuckers were coming at me. i was fucking with their cedar trees, obviously. they left me alone except when i was logging. after i respawned i did check, and logged right in front of one. it's eyes turned red and the fucker charged me like a bull. big fucker too. and then his buddies charged around at me too. those fuckers don't mess around. they hit you hard and knock you into the air and shit. and the manta ray looking things around, i think they were fucking with me too.

now i'll have to find my Quartermaster another gift. the crew's loot is still intact and in the cargo hold, so at least my death won't effect their shares.

i'm just flounderin out here without a damn crew, Quartermaster. i got schematics for a cannons, and i don't even have a master gunner to tell me where he wants em! below decks? above decks?

Quartermaster, we gotta get through a huge damn wind wall if we're ever gonna make it to the Expanse zone and fine all the next tier shit. they got plans for gliders over there just sitting in boxes. you wear em on your back and fly around like a god damn squirrel. and we need upgrades to the gravity drive so we can carry more weight and better armor, and we'll only find that if we can get the engines working and get this ship through to a higher tier zone. and for that, we need the crew.

Okay, so here's the deal, ya scallawags:

When the ship is moving, you better keep yourself locked onto that sucker.
You can do so by sitting at the helm or a cannon turret. If ya don't be doin that, ya may fly overboard!
The sky be a harsh mistress and turblant lag be it's bitch.
If you can't be locked to the craft, be sure to use ya grappling hook, it'll save ya sorry ass while moving around the CSS Minichanopolis.
Learn to use that grappling hook, if you fall off it'll be your last and only hope of getting back on.
Shoot it around until you feel comfortable with it; Your instinct should be to turn around and grapple onto the ship real quicklike if you start to fall off.
When we be flying through a stormwall ALL MEMBERS are ordered to be locked to the ship somehow, be it by sittin at the helm, being stationed at a turret or holding on for dear life with ya grapple hook.
Yall need to stay locked on until the ship makes it through the turbulence. If any of ya need to move around the ship to effect repairs (boatswain) or other things (rest of crew) you need to frequently grapple down.

Oh and if you see any of those junebug flyers, they are to be treated as aggressive and dangerous.

See ya on the skies,
Quartermaster Brie

About Equipment Management:

Alright this is important... The only items or equipment that persist through death are those you have placed onto your belt.
Keep this in mind and put your most important items in your belt, or in an emergency you can swap in items that are the most valuable and rare.
You will have plenty of time as you fall to your inevitable death to manage your items.

All loot and valuables should be transferred to the cargo hold for distribution by the quartermaster in an equitable fashion based on number of shares and rank.

Distribution will be as follows:
Captain: 5 shares
Quartermaster: 2 shares
Boatswain: 1 share
Sailing Master: 1 share
Master Gunner: 1 share
Mateys: 5/12ths share

Shares mostly take the form of preferential loot choice. Our Captain get first 5 picks, then quartermaster gets 2 picks, and so on until the prize is divided up.
Our Captain in an unusual act of generosity has agreed to forego 3 of his shares and distribute them amongst the boatswain, the sailing master and the master gunner.
He understands that getting this crew up to snuff is going to mean giving preferential loot to those that need it most in the tech tree, therefore the Captain is going to defer all unknown schematics to the specialist who needs them (master gunner; cannons, boatswain; engines, sailing master; wings).
BUT, the Captain will still retain first choice of any loot or schematics upgrading the antigravity drive.

Voting and ship roles:

So as ya know, the ship belong to the crew. The Captain may be removed only formally, only upon a vote on minichan. That vote requires all officers to agree on removal and a replacement must be an officer. If the Captain willingly steps down and doesn't fucking mutiny and scuttle the ship then he is welcome to rejoin the crew and take the replacing officer's position. The Quartermaster is also voted on by the crew and may be replaced by the crew regardless of the captain's opinion. Like the Captain, the Quartermaster must be formally removed or replaced during the Sunday special council vote.
On Sundays the Captain will start a thread and bring to a vote any changes to the crew and have an airing of grievances.
All are required to attend the thread but you may abstain from voting.

I've just been made aware that there are no more key's available on Steam right now... apparently the developers are working on servers and population concurrency which means the beta is only open to new users periodically in waves. i happened to hear about it and see it on steam right when the last wave started and i was able to get a key before they closed it down.

evidently this is how they've been doing it, so more keys will be made available with the next wave. i have no idea when that'll be, i'll try and find out.

so, i'm probably going to stop playing until the next wave and others join since i don't think anyone else managed to get a key, everyone was going to get it today :/

according to the rumor mill they're pretty close to opening the beta to everyone anyway. looks like i just tried to muster the crew a bit early... or not early enough however you look at it.

also i'll post about it when the keys are available again, hopefully they're dumping keys on steam once a week.

Oh. wow. okay, so the game was in closed alpha up until about june. founder's packs sold out in two days. they immediately released more keys a few days later, then more on the 15th, and then more 2 weeks later in early july. then they released keys on the 11th and i guess i got in on those. i'd guess there'll be more by next wednesday, maybe earlier. i'll keep an eye out for the announcement and try and give some advance notice for the next wave.

and again i blame the Boatswain for not being here to help at all. whoever takes over that role is going to have a lot to answer for.

so it would seem that a big patch is incoming that's supposed to help with server lag and client freezing. together they were causing a problem that could glitch you off of your ship, which is why being frequently grappled to the ship or mounted onto the helm or gun turret is such a good idea. they may be waiting to release the next batch of keys with the next patch, which is why there weren't any keys added on Wednesday. the patch is deployed as a "beta" on steam, so they're probably reasonably close to having it ready for general release. we should hopefully get at least a days notice when keys are going to be made available again, so i'll keep y'all updated.

oh yeah, also we might want to play on US EAST instead of WEST. US EAST has Freeport Osiris which is a coalition of players who've formed a giant friendly faction and they control a whole Tier 2 Zone and keep it free from pirates. Not that i've actually had a problem with pirates yet, but it also sounds like US EAST is where all the streamers are and where most of the action is taking place in beta. idk if it's actually more populated or if it's just where all the hardcore players play. US EAST is also turning out a handful of famous pirates who're making a name for themselves by attacking Freeport ships and griefing their zone. i haven't gotten out of the Tier 1 starter zone on US WEST so idk if it's as good out there as it is on EAST.

I really want this game because it reminds me of an old Nickelodeon cartoon with a similar premise, but I cannot afford $30 right now.

ship slave girl. you were taken as part of a prize when your parents were killed cowering in a corner of their ship, and as captain i've taken it upon myself to raise you and teach you the ways of the sky. as such, the crew has learned to treat you with a modicum of respect, you're the captain's slave and are not to be harmed. like a daughter to me (but not, because you're a mongrel,) your eventual death at the hands of some Freeport Osiris resident will fuel a burning rage to see all their ships sunk as i endeavor to avenge your savage murder and rape.

you will be -my new Ryan

we also need a ship's cartographer, but that role is super boring and uninteresting compared to slave girl, even if cartographer gets 1 share. it's not even a full officer's position so it doesn't have a vote. pretty lame, huh? and you'd have responsibilities, blegh, totally different ones than the kind of cartography slave girls do. basically we need to have a resource map and know how to quickly get where we want to be. so as we travel from island to island you'll need to make us a map and name all of the places we visit so we'll know what's being referenced. like the small island i found with all the cedar, i named that Cedar Rock, and the big flat island i found i called the Iron Plains because of all the iron nodes. but as cartographer you'd need to draw a map and label it with names and resources and points of interest, and do that for each island we visit. we'll need a whole map of the zone, with the positions of the islands roughly laid out, and any islands we don't visit need to be sketched out, and marked Unknown.

doesn't that just sound boring as hell? you'd probably rather be my personal slave, map making is just a small part of that role.

Catherine !TGirlYJKXM replied with this 1 week ago, 44 minutes later, 5 days after the original post[^] [v] #799,685

Is slave girl a role play position or an actual thing within the game?

Capt. Squeegee (OP) replied with this 1 week ago, 5 minutes later, 5 days after the original post[^] [v] #799,688

it's an actual thing in the game, same as Quartermaster, Boatswain, Master Gunner, Sailing Master, Cartographer, and Mateys. you ask a lot of questions for a slave girl. it's a good thing i feel remorse for killing your parents in cold blood as their bodies shielded you from harm, otherwise i'd sell you off to the first ship headed to the floating island farms of South Virginiapellago.

Captain's Log
Entry: July 21, 2017

i have finally made it through the wind storm and into the Expanse. the Blowhard took damage to the sails, all three have been ripped to shreds and the masts are in need of repair. i was able to limp to a small island and collect enough fuel to begin hunting for resources for repair. without a Boatswain the hold wasn't stocked with nearly enough materials of the right type. Elm does me no good, we need cedar! why is there so much elm down there? i'll tell you why, because we don't have a Boatswain!@

while collecting fuel i observed that the manta ray looking creatures seem more aggressive here. they swoop near to the ship, and i swear one was humping the stern. there was no cedar anywhere to be found on the island, but there was a wealth of knowledge which was collected, and enough fuel to carry us to a new land. i decided against replacing any of the masts with new masts of a different wood type, until the antigravity core is upgraded we need to use the lightest materials available.

i set course for the next island and steamed ahead engines full. the manta rays weren't happy with my crossing and followed me the entire way. while below decks refilling the fuel tank i heard a manta ray screech and suddenly the ship began to lurch to the left. i headed for the steering deck but before i could get there the manta ray swooped in from above and started humping the left engine. i grabbed the controls and tried to level her off, when the right engine blew. the manta ray screeched and went flying away.

the fucker was attacking the ship. it managed to break both engines.

the blowhard slowly came to a stop just off the edge if the island. too far from the edge of the island. without any kind of crew, the ship was helpless and under attack. no boatswain to do repairs. no master gunner to blast them out of the sky. no sailing master to bring us about, the ship was hardly ever even under control. and not a single matey to wield a pistol and protect the ship from flying squid or man the non existent cannons. and it hardly even matters the quartermaster doesn't have a key yet without some kind of crew to organize. this was a complete failure on everyone's part except for mine. i did my job.

i managed to get onto the island and scout around. no cedar anywhere, but a fair amount of knowledge. but without cedar the Blowhard is dead in the doldrums. i can collect enough materials here to build another smaller ship, and i can use that ship to fly around and find some cedar, but the Blowhard will be very much vulnerable here. what we need is for the crew to take a small dingy and explore the new zone and find us enough cedar to perform repairs. normally that would be an expedition led by the Quartermaster and his choice of the crew while the captain stays behind and twiddles his thumbs and guards the ship with a skeleton crew.

but since i don't even have a skeleton crew i suppose i'll be waiting around for a while. everyone thinks the life of a steampunk airship sky captain is nothing but excitement, but the truth is you're all a bunch of ungrateful mutinous bastards and i'll murder the lot of you if i run out of opium before you rescue me. no, take your time. it's fine.

Captain's Log
Entry: July 22, 2017

stranded without a crew and running low on opium i decided it was going to be once again up to me to rescue the ship and the entire crew. i set about building a small sailing dinghy and left the nearby island in search of some cedar trees. i searched several islands and so far have turned up nothing. however, i did find a schematic for upgrading the antigravity core. as soon as i find some cedar i can entirely patch up the hull and will be able to add guns and probably a rudder or two to help with turning. i had collected a bit of loot, including an entire new outfit for the Quartermaster as a gift, but, of course i carelessly fell to my death and lost it all.

i'll try again later and build another small boat and search lower in the world for some cedar trees.

Capt. Squeegee (OP) double-posted this 6 days ago, 49 minutes later, 6 days after the original post[^] [v] #799,867

addendum:

it occurs to me that the entire ship is made from cedar! i should be able to salvage some from the hull plating and at least get a sail working. that should be enough to get the ship to a dock. from there i may replace the engines with engines made from better materials, plus i have several new engines to pick from.

Capt. Squeegee (OP) triple-posted this 6 days ago, 2 hours later, 6 days after the original post[^] [v] #799,889

addendum:

success! the Blowhard sails again. with upgrades. i managed to collect just enough cedar to repair a single sail which was enough to push me all the way to a small dock. once there the two broken engines were scrapped and replaced by two much more powerful engines and a new Anti-gravity component was added to increase the carry weight by half. a rudder was added to help steer, and the sails were all replaced with stronger masts. she's pretty quick and nimble by comparison. with the extra carry weight i was able to add a chest to store more resources. this time i should have plenty of wood resources to keep the sails in repair.

she's sitting at 1250kg or so right now. the cannons are something like 50 or 60 each depending on materials used, so i can probably get 3 on the gun deck as is. another upgrade or two to the antigravity drive and we'll be up to 4 engines and a partially metal hull. when i can build a drive that can carry 2600kg the ship will be rebuilt and made twice the width and with some additional length. we'll need to room for all the upgraded parts and chests and barrels we'll be carrying.

Captain's Log
Entry: July 23, 2017

i had a good interview with our future Boatswain, Beckyderp. she was on the bubble concerning her role so i took her up in a Cessna 172 and we discussed what she wants from this experience on a flight from Addison Regional airport around Dallas. after a chat it turns out the role of Boatswain is right for her after all. she's looking forward to focusing her efforts on resource collection and exploration while on land. while on board ship her responsibilities will include ensuring the ship stock pile of resources is correct and full, that the ship remain in good repair in and out of battle as a first priority, assist with handling sails and refueling the engines as a second priority.

the Boat Builder will provide the Quartermaster with a list of materials required to keep our ships afloat. Quartermaster will release that list after the Captain's weekly airing of grievances thread.

i believe that beckyderp is excited about this great adventure, and if not she should stop being such a drag.

Capt. Squeegee (OP) quintuple-posted this 5 days ago, 10 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^] [v] #800,029

bert somehow stowed away in the rear seat during the flight and he's promised to take on additional duties beyond ship's cook. he's going to take on the full title of Matey in addition to cook, which means he'll have duties off the ship besides collecting berries and fighting bugs. he'll be assigned to a defensive role, essentially to safeguard away parties. to keep beckyderp safe, i think is how he put it. as i've said before, the Boatswain is the less expendable person. i'm debating whether or not i should let him be armed since he's a drunk, i'm probably going to have to let him keep his gun. Bert's share has been raised to 5/6th's to account for the additional responsibility.

that means, bert, if we get boarded you're not allowed to pass out drunk in the galley, you'll either die fighting above decks or i'll have the Quartermaster throw you overboard himself.
