> “These data suggest that the interplay between race and ethnicity as social constructs and genetic ancestry as a biological construct is more complex than we had realized,” said Noah Zaitlen, PhD, a UCSF assistant professor of medicine and co-senior author on the new study.
> “This is a big advancement of our understanding of race and ethnicity,” Burchard said. “There’s this whole debate about whether race is fundamentally genetic or is just a social construct. To our knowledge this is the first time anyone has attempted to quantify the molecular signature of the non-genetic components of race and ethnicity. It demonstrates in a whole new way that race combines both genetics and environment.”

i used to study forensics and anthropology. i did change majors but i got far enough along that i learned a thing or two. number one, there is absolutely no such thing as "ethnicity as a social construct." in fact, we used to use features of skulls to determine everything from race to gender. you can literally distinguish between American Indians and Asians even though they are very similar and share one of the most recent common ancestries of ethnically divergent cultures. And these physiological differences actually do serve different functions - a person ethnically African shares common facial features that improve evaporative cooling. A Samoan has a particular body shape common to people along the equator to again help with the tropical climate. European people are shaped to lose heat less easily and share facial features that inhibit evaporative cooling in windy climates.
there's no real argument that "all people are equal and that ethnicity is a social construct," it is a made up fantasy that one professor of mine went to great lengths to dispel in his classroom. he called it a lesson for stupid bigots, because stupid bigots are too stupid to understand the actual truth and would use the concept of everyone being different as an excuse to persecute people who happen to be different. Things like Phrenology and the holocaust went a long way towards inoculating our society and anthropology in general with the false vaccine called "equality."
but he also stressed that the differences between races are entirely about small morphological changes due almost entirely to climate variations around the world. not to mention that since modern humans arose we haven't had enough separation to evolve anything truly distinct from one another. yes, black people cool slightly better than white people in a breeze, but it's true that white people have all of the same things a black person has, just in different proportions. black skin is black not because it's different, but because they produce more melanin. white people still produce melanin too... just a lot less of it.
so while it's disingenuous to say all people are the same, it's also disingenuous to argue that the differences are anything other than morphological.

I mean this is just a retarded svet trollbait thread, but when people say "everyone is equal" or some platitude like that, they don't mean that everyone is literally identical to every one else on the planet. It's that someone's value as a human being is not determined by their race or sex or whatever, and in that moral sense we are all "equal". Women are shorter than men, but women are not inferior to men because of their sex, and vice versa. Same applies for race, sexuality and so on.

i don't know why it's so shocking for some people to hear that they think liberals will go nuts because people aren't saying "everyone is equal." there is a perception out there that liberals push a false "equality" agenda. i think it's like the war on christmas or social justice, just another manufactured windmill to tilt at, but the net result is a lot of people think the left is blind to racial differences even if that's really not the case.
i remember my professor explaining that in the late 70s and early 80s there was a rift between how physical and cultural anthropology was taught at universities, with cultural anthropology over correcting for their misguided approach to human differences in the previous 100 years. they seemed to take an entirely different approach, showing the similarities and ignoring the differences, and it drove the physical anthro guys crazy. they just wanted to say, well yeah there are differences, of course, but they're not that drastic.
i'm glad to see the cultural guys finally catching up.
A UC San Francisco-led study has identified signatures of ethnicity in the genome that appear to reflect an ethnic group’s shared culture and environment, rather than their common genetic ancestry.

There is societal race and race in biology isn't really much of a thing anymore. Classification tends to be along the lines of evolutionary origins so African, Asian, and European. We are all still one fucking species.
