what a weird little game. it's also surprisingly brilliant. it's a car driving, building, and maintenance simulator as well as a redneck finnish man simulator. there's 3 buttons for cussing, any less would be terrible game design. 3 is just perfect. there's also permanent death, and it's a survival simulator... it's a weird little game.

the first time i played it i managed to put some body paneling on the car and paint it. then the panels fell off because i didn't have them bolted down or know how to work the wrenches. i figured out how to drive my utility van, and i took a job from some local to deliver a flatbed of firewood to him? after driving around the property a bit i found a barn with a bunch of logs, and tractor and a trailer. so i guess i'm the area firewood seller.

there was an axe, and i chopped some wood, and the trailer loaded very slowly. i decided to try and hook up the tractor to the trailer and park it in the barn so it would be easier to load the fire wood. after fussing with the tractor i got it moving, hooked up the trailer, and backed it into the barn. at this point it was dark and i was thirsty and hungry so i headed back to the van and drove to the house. i ate, drank some booze, and tried to figure out how to put wheels on the project car. i gave up and went to bed.

the next day i realized i was out of food, so i hopped in the van and set out to find a store. i took a case of beer with me so i wouldn't get thirsty on the way. it was around this time i discovers the emote to lean out the window and flip passers-by the finger. i also pissed in the van...

on the way to the store i sped past some cops and they chased me down and wrecked me into a ditch. i jumped out of the van with a bottle of beer, drank it, and threw the bottle at the cops. i ran away while pissing everywhere and was then hit by a truck i didn't see coming down the road.

eventually i did use a walkthrough and completely assembled the project car. it's very detailed. there's over 100 parts, and most of them have multiple bolts. there's also no assembly instructions in game. the UI is pretty decently fleshed out, so the building is pretty straight forward, parts snap-to positions and you bolt them on with a variety of tools. it's really cool, and it's not overly complex. it's complex enough. it's complex enough that i doubt many people would be able to do it without a guide. and once your done, it's not even perfect.

i got my project car assembled and the engine started, but there was a terrible squeal. it idles pretty badly, i think, but the bigger issue is that the engine dies after i put it in gear. if i rev the engine high, then pop the clutch, i can get about 100 yard and then it dies again. at this point i was stuck on the side of the road and i think the engine was overheating. i had put coolant in, but now it won't even start.

i walked home and got my van and tried to tow it home, but the van is pretty weak and got stuck itself. it tipped over onto it's side, actually. so then i had to go get the tractor. i brought the tractor over and used the fork lift to right the van, then attached the tow cable to IT and towed them both out with the tractor. so now the project car is back in the driveway and i've got to figure out what's wrong with it.

bad squealing like that on older cars is a fan belt issue, i think. i put a new one on, but there wasn't a way to tighten it. unless i missed seeing it... all the parts are old and used, so maybe i need to buy a new alternator. i've heard there's a way to rebuild the carburetor, or tune it somehow, and that might be part of the problem because it seems to run better with the air filter removed. i guess the fuel mix might be off, idk. the car has a choke on it, and tbh i never really knew what that was for. never had a car that old. i think it was for starting. so i was probably trying to start it with a rich fuel mix or something?

idk. gonna have to deliver some fire wood if i want to buy new parts though, i've spent almost all of my money on sausages and beer.

so appatently i missed some steps in the assembly. i didn't adjust the valves, and in didn't tighten the fan belt. think i blew out the radiator too. and my battery is dead... i pulled the rocker cover, the exhaust manifold, the carb and distributor. got into the valves but now it won't start with a dead battery. figured out how to adjust the alternator to tighten the belt. can't find the coolant leak, probably the radiator i guess. going to start fresh and try again. if i can get it running then i can buy new parts to upgrade it.

it is!

and i got my car working! idles like a kitten. needed lots of minor stuff i missed the first time. but started first shot. adjusting the alternator fixed the belt squeal, connecting all the brake lines fixed the brakes, derp, and adjusting the valves fixed the engine stalling. i have a bad alignment problem with the front end though, kinda beat it up installing parts. i dropped a heavy strut on the fender and dented it. whole front end is gently fucked.

but i'm about to head to the store to pick up the spoiler and ground effects i ordered for it.

it drives now. i had forgotten to connect the gearbox to the drive shaft and a couple of minor things fell off. the front end damage makes the left fender pop off. i kinda wrecked a little too on the test drive and knocked off the right fender too. i threw it in the back seat and fixed it later. the front end alignment was way off, so i corrected that. seems to be driving fairly straight now.

drove it about 5 miles or so. seems to be doing pretty good. i'll drive it to town to fill up on gas and then do a job and buy some fancy parts.

Externally hosted imagethis is pretty much how you start. here i've only added a few pieces of the front end. the plan is to build out the chassis enough that it can roll, then roll it into the garage for everything else. there's a grease pit in the garage that makes it super easy to work on the underside.

Externally hosted imageit comes completely stripped. the front and rear end are vary easy to put together. the trick is doing it without damaging the car. there are jacks that you can use to prevent certain parts from damaging the frame. installing the coil springs and wheels cause the body of the car to bounce, and that's what's been causing all the body damage as well.

that's when it really excels as a redneck Finnish man simulator. you can cruise the country side, drunk, and flip people off. run from the police and get into races. slot machine gambling.

but for real though, really it's not enough that you just build the car, you also have to get it inspected and it needs to pass like emissions testing i guess. and there's a fair amount of tuning you can do to the car so you can make a quarter mile drag racer or an endurance rally car. there actually are races in the game. not sure how that works though, haven't done it yet. i think you can win trophies.

not sure what else there is to do aside from the jobs, and you'd only do that if you're looking to soup-up your car. which i am...

oh, i didn't know that. i know you can teleport home by getting blackout drunk. you'll just wake up in bed needing to piss real bad. handy if you wreck you van and need to go get your tractor.

i've been cheating and using backup save folders so if i do something irreversible i don't get set back too far. i dunno what to do if you wreck your van AND your tractor. plus it's a huge pain in the ass towing stuff and walking is super slow. once you do get your car running, be sure to take your tools with you in the trunk, you'll probably need them. my drive gear fell off earlier.

@previous (brie !kGoudaMCFA)
brakes work just fine, but you don't start with any fluids, so no coolant, no oil, no brake fluid. you also have to buy a fan belt.
i recommend going to the store first thing and buying 2 bottles of coolant, 2 bottles of oil, and 3 brake fluid, and the one fan belt. you'll need the 3 brake fluids, and probably just use one of each of the others. but there are like 12 brake lines to connect and missing one leaves a bad leak so it's easy to run out if you make a mistake. till i figured out brake lines i was buying all the brake fluid they had in stock.

here are the 2 videos i followed along the first time
https://youtu.be/4doydRPmo88
https://youtu.be/frP7Ae4tdVY

they are easy to follow, there's no explanation, just do what the guy does. this will get you placing each item where it is intended to go. i will say this tutorial does not lead to a fully functional car. it does start, but it sounds like shit and won't go. the reason is pretty clear in the video, at times you'll watch the dude tightening up bolts to nothing, because he's installing parts in a weird order, and so the thing he's tightening the bolt onto isn't even there yet. this will lead to parts not being connected correctly when they are placed onto an already tightened bolt. so follow along with the video to see where everything goes, it does make for a great reference. it's kinda like having a tear-down manual from the mechanic, even if it's the wrong procedures you still get the visual references.

once you kinda know where parts go, then you can follow the correct procedure outlined here:
http://my-summer-car.wikia.com/wiki/MY_SUMMER_CAR_GUIDE_2:_ELECTRIC_BOOGALOO

following this guide exactly WILL result in a working car. i couldn't find a video of anyone following this guide exactly, but it's fine once you know kinda where to put things. what i've been doing is starting with the chassis and building out up the where it asks you to install spark plugs (it assumes you did the engine first), then do the engine completely, install that into the car, and THEN finish out the chassis starting with spark plugs. this allowed me to roll the incomplete car into the garage and do the rest of the work there. oh yeah, and because the front end work can be super damaging to the frame, so i didn't want to finish the engine and then fuck up the front end. so i did the easy to fuck up part first and once i was satisfied and it was in a safe spot in the garage i could stop resetting and go ahead and finish it out.

but also like the first 3 times i tried building it i didn't care too much because i knew i'd make mistakes and fuck it up. 1st one started briefly. second one drove about 100 meters, stalled, and then fell apart. 3rd one drove pretty well with no major mechanical issues, but cosmetically was pretty fucked, couldn't even mount the fenders. 4th one, managed to keep everything in good shape and it seems to be driving fine. made it to town and back

turns out i probably have the car pretty close to tuned as well as can be expected. i can probably do better with the carburetor, but the low torque problem is apparently just inherent to the car. it's just old. old cars run poorly when they're cold, so i've started properly using the choke to start the engine and then back off when it starts to warm up. and you just have to give it a lot of throttle in first gear or it'll die. kinda gotta pop the clutch a bit too sometimes. once it's warmed up though those problems go away.

but, i did blow out the radiator at some point. it's starting to want to overheat as well. i have the new performance radiator on the way, but i ordered wheels at the same time. the bill is 4500 and i've got well less than that. gotta clean out some more shit holes i guess. i wish someone would buy some damn firewood, i've got a whole trailer full.

oh, and i learned that there's a scrap yard. so that's how you replace lost or broken parts. i've heard that you can seize an engine by running it without oil, and that'll destroy the pistons and cam shaft. i was wondering what we're supposed to do if we destroy or lose something.

for some reason i didn't think to check for one till yesterday, but there's a My Summer Car subreddit.
https://www.reddit.com/r/MySummerCar/

there's only like 3 pages so far since it just release last week, but there's a lot of good information there. like i just learned that you can edit the car body textures by modifying a template.png and placing it into the right folder. unfortunately the only way to edit other textures, such as brake calipers, requires the use of sketchy 3rd party software to crack the files. doesn't look like there's an easy way to do that atm.

but there are a small handfull of more current build videos and good information. people are also posting links to save games with completed cars on file sharing sites. other than a small wiki and a steam thread there's not much info out there. reddit is catching it all, which is nice.

Jubilee Starshine (OP) double-posted this 1.1 year ago, 1 hour later, 4 days after the original post[^] [v] #730,749

Externally hosted imagegot the radiator installed and filled with coolant. seems to be running pretty well! haven't driven it, just idled and let it warm up and made sure it wasn't loosing coolant. it's not, so it's test drive time.

Jubilee Starshine (OP) triple-posted this 1.1 year ago, 2 minutes later, 4 days after the original post[^] [v] #730,750

Externally hosted imagei read on reddit that these aftermarket parts will cause me to fail inspections, so to get this thing inspected i'll need to swap out parts and take the old radiator to the repair shop. really wish i'd known about the damn warning triangle :\

Jubilee Starshine (OP) quadruple-posted this 1.1 year ago, 2 hours later, 4 days after the original post[^] [v] #730,765

Externally hosted imagenice, it runs pretty damn well. still has a bit of trouble with low end torque, so from a dead stop it's hardish to get moving in first gear. but once you do it's fine. fairly high revs and letting the clutch out slowly helps keep it from stalling out. otherwise it's great. i drove out to the repair shop and checked out what's available. there's a lot that can be done there. but it is pretty expensive, but it looks like they can repair the whole engine and also do all the tuning for you, which is pretty sweet

(Edited 57 seconds later.)

Jubilee Starshine (OP) quintuple-posted this 1.1 year ago, 1 minute later, 4 days after the original post[^] [v] #730,767

Externally hosted imagethey can also work on the gearbox and change out the final gear. not sure what these would do, but i imagine you can increase top speed

Jubilee Starshine (OP) sextuple-posted this 1.1 year ago, 2 minutes later, 4 days after the original post[^] [v] #730,768

Externally hosted imagehaving the car body repaired is costly as fuck too. it's a rusted out hulk when you start with it, spray paint helps, but you can still see the roughness where the rust is underneath in some places. i guess this will remove that, but you'd have to do each one i suppose.

Jubilee Starshine (OP) septuple-posted this 1.1 year ago, 1 minute later, 4 days after the original post[^] [v] #730,769

Externally hosted imageyou can paint the car too, and there's more options than the spray paint. or different options maybe. there are factory colors and RGB custom colors. standard and metallic paints. the metallic paint is super reflective, and super expensive

Externally hosted imageand last they'll paint rims.

after i left there i hit the highway to check out top speeds. before i modified it i took the car with stock parts and was lucky to hit 140 downhill, and it was hard to control, rear end drifted some. the spoilers help a good bit with that, because it's pretty stable now. i have no idea exactly how fast i was going because my speedometer was wrapping around, but it might've been 170. i blew past 140 which was kinda my ceiling before i got the dual carbs. past 160 and it just kept going. flat highway too, not downhill. i happened to be being chased by the cops right then and didn't slow down for a gradual turn and i flew into a ditch before i could see the speedometer stop. i was trying to gauge just how far past 160 i was, and i think it might've been close to 180 when i hit the ditch. i'm going to go hit the longest stretch of highway and try to screenshot where the needle stops (or i blow the engine.)

Jubilee Starshine (OP) nonuple-posted this 1.1 year ago, 17 minutes later, 4 days after the original post[^] [v] #730,773

fucking hell. i hit the rev limiter and hit the wrong button. let me try it again. i was, uh, going very fast. lost the cops this time, lol. but again, lost it on a curve and hit a tree. died instantly. i need to learn the roads better if i'm going to be running from the law.

Jubilee Starshine (OP) decuple-posted this 1.1 year ago, 41 minutes later, 4 days after the original post[^] [v] #730,774

Externally hosted imagefinally got a good pic. i'm calling this over 200kph. maybe 205 even.

that's 127mph for you american non-finnish people. it can do better. i haven't even done any adjusting to the carb i don't think. i might be running a bit rich, i'm told IRL a lean fuel mix makes you run hot and rich mix will blow smoke black smoke, which i may be doing a little bit of. but that might also explain why i'm hitting 200+ and why it's got such poor low end torque. i really gotta rev the engine in first gear and heavily choke the engine to get rolling. if i lean it out a bit i might pick up some torque and that would give me better acceleration or something like that.

anyway, this is my current speed record

Jubilee Starshine (OP) undecuple-posted this 1.1 year ago, 9 minutes later, 4 days after the original post[^] [v] #730,775

Externally hosted imageoh yeah, and the rally tires seem to help with rough terrain handling. i don't spin out much and unless i'm just flat going too fast it corners nice and tight. don't know that they're doing me many favors on the asphalt though. the racing slicks likely have great traction on the highway and can corner even faster than the rally tires. my second speed run went really well, i lapped the map twice and was cornering everything easily at 140. i was being conservative though, i felt like it could've maybe handled most turns a good bit faster, i just went into them slowly and punched it when i felt it hook the corner, i'd draw out a bit to the outside edge of the lane, and maybe cornering a bit more aggressively would let me hit 160 with a bit of drift on the rear end, which i did manage to pull off once, i just didn't glimpse my speed do i'm not sure how fast i was cornering. but, i did lose the police completely twice. passing them at 150 and stomping on the gas means i never even see their lights in my rear view. but you know they're chasing you cause the sirens.

Externally hosted imagefixed up the door trim on the frame, looks better in white. it's not hard to do 2 tone, it's just a matter of finding all the little things on the template.

Externally hosted imagei'm putting the racing slicks on, the silver car has them and it can take most corners on the highway at full speed. all but 1 i think. the hello kitty car is fast as fuck too. it's been tuned at the mechanic and i leaned it out a bit even from what he set it for so i'm governing at like 220 i think

Externally hosted imagehere are the "completed" skins i can share. i keep going back and nit picking them... this one i've been fucking with so it looks good without bumpers, the rear is complete and the front i figure is done, but i was planning on fixing some small details on the front fender. but i may not, it may be complete as is

Externally hosted imageHello Kitty racer. bit more detail focused i guess, but far from perfect. lining stuff up across seams is kinda touchy

Externally hosted imagetesting colors again. some colors don't come out looking good in game. some light colors end up just looking white. baby blue and pale colors especially. bright primary colors and darker shades come out looking good.

Externally hosted imagesome of these look okay, others not so much. i'm looking at IRL reference photos for color combinations and striping patterns and stuff like that, but most may not look right without all the branding logos stamped everywhere

Externally hosted imagei did the rally race over the weekend! i ran the route several times getting ready for it. there's one really long dirt road in the game and the race is pretty much the entire road. i run it a lot, or parts of it anyway, getting around the map but i did a bunch of practice runs leading up to it. this is my car after the first completed run i made without either dying or totaling the car. i was trying to maintain an average of 80kph over the entire course. the road is marked as 60kph and i've found that every turn - even the really hairy ones - can be taken at 60kph. the npc's can do it, and so can the player.

Externally hosted imagei'd also run it in reverse a lot, there's not a race in that direction but it does help with track awareness. there were less problems getting home, and i probably did it faster with the reduced weight actually. the car is crazy loud without a muffler though. i might've lost the exhaust pipe too... the car can take a pretty good beating, the body is kinda easy to fuck up though. not that a roll-over wreck shouldn't look like this, but sometimes hitting a dip in the road too fast will bend the frame enough to dislodge the hood.

no idea what my times were during practice runs. mostly i'd wreck somewhere and limp to the finish or reset. this run i did go pretty well flat out as fast as i could and maintain control. i even lost control at one point, obviously, but i ended up back on the road and driving so it was a success. there are lots of little bumps where you'll get air at high speed, it's a lot of fun, but it's also hard to recover from when you start to lose it and you're airborne.

Externally hosted imagethis is after the race! no wrecks. i wanted to finish, so i drove fairly conservatively. i still hit my corners at a good clip and accelerated out and into straights and used brakes liberally to enter into turns, but i didn't top out at more than 120 and in the stretches held around 100 more or less. at 120+ i was hitting a bounce and flying off the road and into a tree or over correcting for slight wobbles and ending up tumbling end over end down a ditch. i've done the stretches successfully at 120+ but each success was only after a very gnarly recovery, so for the first race i decided to rely on my confidence in the corners and really nail that and give the straights a lot of throttle but a lazy 4th gear. sneak up on 120 where it's safe, and then throttle back and coast over the rough spots.

Externally hosted imagei came in dead last :D

but you can subtract 2 minutes to get my actual run time. i was penalized in the beginning of the race because i didn't know where the starting line was and i pulled forward too far. i thought it wanted me between 4 cones in a box, but instead it wanted me behind the 4 cones. so. still not even close to a winning time, and people on reddit claim 4:45 runs but i've yet to see a picture of the card.

but it's not unbelievable, there's a lot of time to be made up all over the track. i can certainly eek out more speed on the straights, and i can get better with speeds in and out of corners, and i can also further mod the car by fucking with the gear train and giving myself more acceleration in second gear or a longer 3rd gear i could wind out to 150kph or so. something like that. i bet i can get under 6 minutes without needing to mod the car any further. we'll see.

i think you get a trophy you can take home and put on your shelf if you place in the top 3
