Externally hosted imageI just mounted a 24 watt grow light under the top shelf of my desk. I bought it from an “indoor gardening” supply store, yesterday. Their prices for simple, small purchases are quite good! I suppose their margins are largely on the expensive items for growing pot. I’m contemplating another light or three.

I mixed together pumice, vermiculite, and potting soil for the grow medium.

Is that a serious question?! No. Why would they?

Regardless, if I was actually growing something illegal, the wattage I’m currently using (54 watts, total) isn’t significant enough to catch attention, and these fluorescent bulbs hardly produce heat.

This is what the police are actually keeping themselves busy with:

I'm keeping my chiles in pots this year.

Padron plant is getting lots of pods now, habaneros are just getting their first pods. Fish peppers reacted badly to getting sprayed with soap to kill aphids and got burnt a bit but are now getting blossoms.

Scorpions have been flowering for a month but have just been dropping their blossoms, dozens and dozens of wasted blossoms. I was thinking the seeds I harvested grew sterile plants due to cross pollination but I just found a couple tiny pods and they look like scorpions. Dont know the strain, but the pods I got the seeds from were probably only 600-800k scoville, so not catastrophically hot.

That's what they do. They use illegal methods to find "growers" then get a junky to lie and say they bought weed from you to get a warrant. It's really disgusting. Be careful. They will come with a no-knock warrant. If you have a dog, keep them locked away or the police will shoot them. You might want to prevent this by inviting the police over to see your garden and let them know they can come check at any time. Otherwise, you risk being murdered. Seriously.

I will take some new ones tonight. I have some on my phone, but if they are going to be the same size as from my dslr might as well be resizing quality pics.

I've got some strange tomatoes this year, like striped caverns. They're like bell peppers - firm walls, chambered, hollow, with a clump of seeds hanging from the stem. Not very flavorful, but great for stuffing or as a bowl for chicken salad. No ripe ones yet.

I'll have ripe mortgage lifters and trifele black soon. Indigo rose are really, really blue now. No one I know believes that there are blue tomatoes.

Got a few like that early on the mortgage lifters. Then they just did double flowers. When the plants got big just big single flowers.

I have 20 varieties of seed stashed away but just a few of each, a friend gave me a fee to get started. I'll build a bigger supply of the ones I have now, and will branch out next year. Next year will probably be cherokee purple and green zebra. Maybe another potato-leafed type. I have brandywine seeds, and might be able to find some hillbilly, or I could just buy some...

Smaller scorpion plant with habanero plants in the foreground and background. You can see why they are called scorpion peppers in this picture - they have "tails" like a scorpion's sting. The flowers don't fall off, they stick to the pod and constrict it.

Japanese Trifele Black, which are neither Japanese, nor black. Black is a mysterious tomato term meaning darker red than you'd expect. They stay unripe looking around the stem. This plant might have cross pollinated, they're kind of odd colored for the variety.

60+ mph winds for almost ten minutes... I think the initial burst was even stronger. I just restaked some of my tomato plants, I was using old tree branches and some blew out of the ground, despite being stuck in at least a food. The wind blew over a completely sheltered eggplant plant, hopefully it is all right. I straightened it and packed the dirt down a bit and it is standing up at least. Too dark to weave all my tomato plants back together, but it looks like nothing broke.

The larger scorpion pepper plant blew off the deck and into the yard, it seems OK. The wind blew it ten feet in an 11" wide, 12" deep pot full of wet soil. All of my pumpkin and squash vines had their leaves flattened, but they'll pop up when the sun hits them. The other scorpion pepper plant is in a 10" ceramic pot and it still blew over.

That was intense. Another round coming, hope it weakens a bit before it hits. Going to go take one more look for anything that needs immediate attention.

Holy fuck :(

I saw a Reddit post where some garden was decimated by hail. I find myself really loving the Pacific Northwest—none of that crazy shit happens.

Only had a few chunks of hail, they had 2" hail a few miles away.

We had a great hailstorm here several years ago. 18" of hail or more in some places. They were plowing highways in August. It was completely bizarre.

Didn't lose a pod on any of the pepper plants. Everything is dirty, and I'll have to restake a few more plants (everything just collapsed into a pile and I couldn't get to all of it because the second round is starting, but it's breaking up a bit. Inch and a quarter of rain in 15 minutes or so, anything that doesn't die will be nice and hydrated, lol.

Doesn't sound like there is any wind with this storm, just a downpour.

Got a chicken soup plant from a friend. Trying to get a cutting to root so I have another. Weirdest plant ever.

Wish I knew exactly what it was. It's a Vietnamese(?) herb that smells exactly like chicken broth. Boil a few leaves in water and you get something that tastes like chicken soup, then you can just add vegetables or whatever.

I was also given a few pineapple ground cherries and some rosemary. Hope the ground cherries have enough time to seed themselves for next year.
