Topic: I feel like gaming peaked in the late 90s-early 2000s.

I don't know if its just me or not but everything since then has just been better graphics, but actual gameplay mechanics have not improved since.

Completely agree. Graphics quality doesn't improve a game's storyline.

it is just you there are more great games now than ever

Killer Lettuce !!iNo3FkiZx joined in and replied with this 1.8 year ago, 4 minutes later, 11 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #386,380

Nope. Since the rise of indie games we're seeing more new and interesting mechanics than ever. Also, it's not just graphics that have advanced. We've had improvements in storytelling and performance too, for example.

Take off the rose-tinted googles, bud.

I've played 3 of the 25 games listed. Wasn't expecting that. Great games though.

Last year*

But this year will have great games as well. Watch_Dogs, GTAV, Star Wars 1313, and Crysis 3 just to name a few off the top of my head.

Games are getting easier, not necessarily worse. COD needs to die though.

I guess that's a better way to put it. Call of Duty is getting so repetitive. New idea, let's put the ability to prestige the weapons! Yeah, that's so original.

lol that game is focused on xp gainig, 13 year olds wouldn't stay interested if they maxed out their characters after a month

They're really tight-lipped about it. They've shown a small bit of gameplay and very little else, but it looks decent enough.

FPS games are the worst in this regard. You have a gun, you shoot people. In other words, the same as DOOM (1993) but again with just better graphics.

SO MUCH THIS. I don't understand how people keep falling for this shit.

"Shooting people" is pretty much a prerequisite for being a fps though

Pretty much. I mean, I won't lie and say I don't play them, but I could give a fuck less about my level. I like to piss people off and fuck around lol. I think my favorite multiplayer FPS has to be CS 1.6

i havent played any of the recent call of duty games because they are so expensive and generally come out around the time when other games i know i will like come out too.

This. $50 for the same old game but with new weapons/levels and incrementally better graphics? LOL At least in the old days when you bought a game it was the full game and you didn't have to pay extra for downloadable content and to play it online.

Completely understandable. The only reason I can play it is because my cousin got it and I'm living with my cousins at the moment. Personally, I also think it's bullshit to pay for additional game content such as $20 just for a couple extra map packs they make half ass to make more money.

What happened to decent expansion packs?

Why would anybody get tired of this? As a core mechanic, it works. And I think you're simplifying all FPSs just a bit. There's more to them than their most basic mechanic.

@previous
This.

@386,410
Hey now, don't judge all of modern gaming on Call of Rehash. That's like judging all of television based on Family Guy. (I actually like Family Guy but it's something popular that a lot of people hate because they think it's dumb, so it's a decent analogy).

I'm not saying anyone would, I just mean innovation in computer games peaked around the late 90s. Gaming in the year 2003 was vastly different than gaming in 1993, but gaming in 2013 isn't much different than gaming in 2003 apart from improved graphics and incremental improvements.

I may just be getting old. Last year some IRL friends wanted me to get into playing Call of Duty and I didn't because there were like 9 different versions and a new one comes out every week and none of them are compatible with each other and I couldn't figure it out so I just said "fuck it" and went back to playing old games by myself. Back in my day if you wanted to play Quake III (for example) there was one version and it just worked.

You just seem to be looking at the mainstream triple A games. Again, the rise of indie games has given us an explosion of quality mechanics and ideas. Most of them don't particularly care about graphics either.

Every generation becomes more and more superficial as media becomes more about big tits and less about content.

Games are no different. Focusing on graphics sells games. Focusing on gameplay creates obscure oddities like Dwarf Fortress.

It's a dying breed. Take Skyrim for example, previous games in the Elder Scroll series had longer and better expansions/dlc.
It makes a lot more sense for developers to make more and shorter DLC then big once off expansions.
